ZimCoke is a Mauritian company involved in the production of coke and related products. Its current portfolio consists of the Coke making assets in RedCliff, Zimbabwe.
Coke is a fuel with a high carbon content and few impurities, made by heating coal in the absence of air. It is the unsung hero of many processes in industry, as it reduces chromite to ferrochrome, iron ore to pig iron, cuprous ores to copper, to name but a few applications. The industrial revolution would not have happened without coke.
Coke is also used as a reducing agent in smelting iron ore in a blast furnace, or as fuel for forging. It may be used to make synthesis gas, a mixture of carbon monoxide and hydrogen. Since smoke-producing constituents are driven off during the coking of coal, coke forms a desirable fuel for stoves and furnaces in which conditions are not suitable for the complete burning of bituminous coal itself.
